Course Outlines

The ASA – American Sailing Association program, approved by the U.S. Coast Guard and recognized by many international Coast Guards, is the governing body in the United States which sets the standards for sailing education throughout North America and elsewhere worldwide. ASA has structured levels of sailing standards, which are examined at progressive certification levels. Students receive a Logbook that lists the standards, certification and records sailing experience.  All courses and examinations are taught by local, and occasionally foreign visiting, ASA qualified instructors. When a certification level is successfully completed, your Logbook is signed and stamped so that any charter or rental fleet operator can see your level of competency. The most popular courses we offer are as follows:

 Basic Keelboat Sailing Standard (#101)
Pre-requisites: None

Upon successful completion, student/sailors must sail a boat of about 35 feet (10.6 m) or more in length in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision. Successful candidates earn a National Safe Boating Certificate approved by NASBLA and the U.S. & Greek Coast Guards.

 Basic Coastal Cruising Standard (#103)
Pre-requisites: Basic Keelboat Sailing Certification

Sailors must demonstrate that they can cruise safely in local and regional waters on an auxiliary powered sailing yacht of about 35 to 50 foot (10.6 – 15.2 m) in length, in moderate winds and sea conditions.
As a practice/policy of our sailing academy, we offer and teach both of the above courses simultaneously.

 Bareboat Chartering Standard (#104)
Pre-requisites: Basic Keelboat Sailing and Basic Coastal Cruising Certification

An advanced cruising standard for individuals with cruising experience. The individual can act as a skipper or crew of a 35 to 50 foot yacht sailing by day in coastal waters. The standard includes knowledge of boat systems and maintenance procedures.

Coastal Navigation (#105)
Pre-requisite:
None but if the student has taken any of the previous ASA courses it would be of great benefit.
This total of 8 hours (part-time for locals) classroom only course will cover Navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal and inland waters. Subjects include chart reading and interpretation, government and private publications, navigation equipment and use, tide and current tables, plotting position, bearings, running fixes, set and drift, lights, day shapes, buoyage systems, current and leeway and much more.
Course Objectives: This course builds confidence in navigation skills before attempting an offshore passage.

 Multihull/Catamaran Cruising (#114)
Pre-requisite:
ASA certifications of #101, #103 & #104 and/or RYA Competent Crew or equivalent skill level

The course concentrates on the handling characteristics of 35-50 foot catamarans. Intricate manoeuvres and drills, under both power and sail, insure participants gain the ability to command a cruising catamaran. Additional areas covered include engine mechanics, navigation, advanced anchoring techniques, docking, meal preparation underway, heavy weather and emergency procedures.

Private Lessons - Anywhere, Anytime
If you want the convenience and security of your own program and at your convenience, literally anywhere in the world, and/or you would like to condense your learning program, this is the way for you. Concentrate specifically on the areas that you want to learn. Great for those who are first time yacht owners, we give you the confidence necessary in all aspects of yacht ownership, from basic manoeuvring and docking to putting up the spinnaker and basic maintenance procedures.

Weekend Courses for local Residents
Four weekend long scheduled part-time program (Courses 101 and 103)
